Picking up where
Dead or Alive left
off, Clancy’s familiar cast of characters once again faces a
world-threatening terrorist who, thanks to recently acquired
nuclear weapons, finally has the firepower to back his political
ambition. On the homefront, Ryan Sr. is trying to get re-elected
but faces stiff opposition from powerful enemies. The plot was a
little thin in places, and some notable questions unanswered,
but the familiarity of the
dramatis personae smooths the rough patches.

Clancy introduces us to
Maxwell Moore, Navy SEAL and CIA operative whose undercover work
amidst the Taliban cells of Pakistan leads him to discover a
plot that involves using the Mexican drug cartels to smuggle
terrorists into the United States. Moore provides some
much-needed fresh blood in Clancy’s long-running character pool.
Clancy has now churned out his second book in six months (with
some help on each), and continues to write high-stakes, nicely
entertaining military thrillers.
