 76-WORD REVIEW [MAY 11]

After the sudden death of his long-time wife, Enns began grappling more personally with the Bible’s teaching on heaven. Much of this book is the fruit of that study and Enns helpfully breaks down what we can know about heaven from Scripture, debunking common misconceptions. Several problems abound, however, including Enns speaking solely from his eschatological bias which, while understandable, tends to come across as ostentatious. With such a potent topic, I was hoping for more.

 FIVE QUOTES

The notions about heaven that many people have do not come from Scripture; rather it is their failure to study Scripture that has led to a lack of knowledge and understanding of the biblical meaning of heaven. [17]

Can you begin to imagine, to fathom the glory, the wonder, the excitement, the joy that will be ours living and celebrating in Christ’s kingdom? Keep focused. Amid the sorrow and suffering in this troubled world, keep focused. [71]

It is so easy to be caught up in the “American dream” and focus on materialism while losing the eternal blessing. Any sacrifice made in this life is entirely incidental to the enormity of the reward that believers will reap in positions of authority and service for Christ on the new earth. [148]

Heaven is always better than earth—in every dimension. There is no realm in which earth is better. In no way will we ever be poorer in heaven than on earth. [157]

Probably our greatest problem is that we are so rooted in this world. It is possible to be so enamored with this life and this world that there is little thought about heaven. Materialism has been destructive to the Christian life, and the very thing that God provided for us to enjoy life has become an end in itself and, in effect, a god. [184]
