 76-WORD REVIEW [SEP 10]

Matthew Henry, perhaps best known for his commentary on the Bible, actually stopped that work short of completion to pen A Method for Prayer in 1710. This modern-day reprint is a very brief sampler from that work, where Henry skillfully demonstrates how to pray the very words of Scripture back to the One from whom they came. Credit O. Palmer Robertson for overseeing and editing this sampler, a helpful tool when it comes to effective prayer.

 FIVE QUOTES

In view of the shortness of time, give us grace to weep as though we were not even weeping, and to rejoice as though we were not rejoicing. If we buy anything, let us not think of it as our personal possession. Let us make good use of this world though not abusing our privileges, for the time is short, and the current world order is passing away. [33]

We approach the throne of grace, not only to seek God’s favor, but to give Him the glory due to His Name. We give Him glory by honoring Him for His infinite perfections as the one and only living and true God. We also glorify Him by gratefully acknowledging the many manifestations of His goodness to us. [35]

Our thanks must come from the heart, a heart that shows genuine appreciation for His gifts, but always loves the Giver more than the gift. [36]

As Israel of old rehearsed the mighty acts of God in their behalf, so let God’s people today review with thanksgiving the many workings of God’s grace in planning and perfecting His redemptive work through Christ. [39]

Never presume to dictate to Him the program you have laid out for your life. Instead, as you offer up your desires to Him, gladly submit to His infinite wisdom as you humbly give expression to your needs, desires, and burdens. Ask Him to do whatever He judges to be best for His glory, your good, and the worldwide spread of the saving gospel of Christ. [52]
