The Taking
Dean Koontz // 338 pages | 2004
Main Heading: Fiction

While Koontz remains a master at creating atmosphere within the
pages of his books, the awkward vocabulary of this book was,
frankly, quite disjointing at times. His words aren’t incorrect,
but are uncommon, which often takes you out of the moment to
think about their meanings. And the conclusion, while fitting in
context with the story, still seems a bit abrupt, and somewhat
forced, leaving a bit of a let down after such a tense build-up.

Koontz, once known solely for writing horror, has also begun to
shift to other arenas. This story certainly has its share of
suspense, but it builds to a head throughout the book, picking
up the pace with each new revelation. Koontz has crafted a very
inventive, fleshed-out tale where even the tone of the book
matches the characters in an uncommonly apt way, bringing these
fictitious people a rich depth of personality and life.
Surprisingly enjoyable.
