Deadlock

A continuation of his last book, Deadfall, Liparulo picks up the
story of John “Hutch” Hutchinson, this time in his native
Colorado. Hutch has become obsessed with taking down Brendan
Page, the father of Deadfall’s villain. What lengths will Hutch
go to in order to see justice done? Although the setting
changes, Liparulo continues to write in a very action-driven
style that is light on character depth or plot. A decent effort,
but ends up lacking.

Unlike most fiction, no character is safe -- there are several
surprising injuries and/or deaths. Liparulo has a good sense of
story, but relies too heavily on exposition to unveil motivation
and backstory instead of using characters’ words and choices.
The villains, while plausible, are not probable. Liparulo gives
into genre clichés about three-quarters of the way through and
from there the ending is clearly telegraphed to anyone who's
read a book or seen a movie.
