 76-WORD REVIEW

The text of McCullough’s 1776 is contained here, albeit in slightly abridged form. However, reproductions of key letters, maps, and documents cited in the book serve to enhance the overall experience. It's doubtful that there has ever been a collection assembled quite like this. Dozens of removable sketches, photos, newspaper clippings, and images from the era work with the historical narrative to make this a tremendous resource of one of the most important periods in America.

 76-WORD REVIEW

The untrained, outnumbered continental army faced the full might of the British Empire, and defeat was more than likely -- it was nearly ensured. McCullough takes his readers on a worthwhile journey through one of the most seminal years in the history of America. Although the book is a bit shorter than I would have liked, it is a powerful reminder of how tenuous our nation's beginnings were, and how our victory was anything but certain.
