James Garfield had no desire to be President, yet he was
nominated and elected. Little did he know that a madman would
set his sights on killing Garfield, believing God was
instructing him to do so. Tragically, while the gunshot was not
fatal, the medical treatment Garfield received ultimately led to
his death. Millard keeps the tension high and the flow strong as
she narrates a fascinating account of an oft-neglected period in
our nation's history.

In 1914, after an unsuccessful bid to reclaim the White House, Theodore
Roosevelt embarked on a journey that he hoped would cement his legacy—but
actually threatened to end his life. Accompanied by his son Kermit, naturalist
George Cherrie, and renowned Brazilian explorer Colonel Candido Rondon,
Roosevelt attempted to brave an uncharted river in the heart of the Amazon
rainforest. Millard’s recounting is fraught with tension and (though prone to
straying off-topic at times) thoroughly engrossing.
